Ahead of the much-anticipated launch of her book, Rough Diamond, author Aishatu Abdulwahab has described the story as "a journey of determination and resilience."
The book delves deep into the life of Habeebah, a young girl born into humble beginnings in Dadin Kowa, a vibrant yet challenging neighborhood in Jos, Plateau State. Rough Diamond captures her struggles and triumphs as she navigates life in a society that often undervalues dreams born in the slums. From being mocked as the "bucket girl" for fetching water in her community to enduring hardships as a street hawker, Habeebah's resilience shines through.
Raised in a family battling financial constraints, Habeebah had to juggle her academic aspirations with hawking plastic wares and later groundnuts. Her journey was far from easy. She faced ridicule from classmates and even parents who doubted her potential, labeling her ambitions as "unrealistic." Despite these challenges, her unwavering determination and the support of her family and neighborhood friends kept her dream alive.
The book also explores the dark realities of street life, including the dangers faced by young hawkers, such as harassment and exploitation. Yet, it celebrates the power of community, resilience, and self-belief in overcoming adversities.
Speaking about the inspiration behind Rough Diamond, Aishatu said, "This is not just a story; it is a mirror reflecting the lives of many young people whose dreams are stifled by poverty and societal prejudices. But it is also a testament that, like diamonds, the roughest beginnings can produce the brightest shine when polished with determination and grit."
As the launch date approaches, readers can look forward to an inspiring tale that underscores the importance of perseverance and the strength of the human spirit.
