The first of these desire changes has to do with political leadership. It is the general believe that Nigeria is where she is because of the kind of leadership she has been having over the years. To a large extent, this is because leadership is everything. The advance nations are where the are today because of the thinking level and governance ideas being generated and implemented by their leaders.
This is why Nigerians hold the firm conviction that their nation is not progressing as it should because their leaders have not being thinking of grand ideas with a view to implementing them for the goodness of all and sundry. So Nigerians want good leaders in the mould of globally acclaimed transformers such as singare’s le kuanyew, Rwanda’s paul Kagame, united Arab Emirates sheikh Muhammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, etc. these leaders have lifted their respective nation from the valley of under development to peak of development.
The same cannot be said of Nigeria-a nation so endowed but being short changed by leadership deficit. Nigeria now have strong conviction that conviction that is only when the are good in position of power that things will to being to change.
Economic Development is another area Nigeria needs changes .in this regards, the economy of Nigeria has not been performing optimally over the decades. This is inspite of the land. It is an established facts that Nigeria is one of the most resources rich nations on earth whether it is an established fact that Nigeria is blessed beyond measure. But all the endowments have not translated to positive development impacting on lives of the citizens. That is why change is needed int the e
Economy. Countries such as United Arab Emirates, Norway, Saudi Arabia Russia, Kuwait, etc. are making the most of their oil resources in it terms of transforming their economics and making the lives of their citizens better but Nigeria is not doing the something. Instead, proceeds from her oil resources are being looted by a privilege few at the expense of subjugated majority. It is not only the oil sector that is being mismanaged.
The agricultural sector is also not doing well. Nigeria has become of food from countries that do not even have a landmass that is a big as that of Nigeria. Her agricultural sector is still archaic as formers still used crude implements to farm. Yet this is nation that presides itself as an agrarian nation and yet she is not able to able to produce food in sufficient quantities to feed her teeming populace let along export this has to change. Nigeria must mechanized her agricultural sector so as to be producing enmass as the giant of Africa that she is truly is huge erable lying follow land that are lying follow to the detriment of economic growth and development must be utilized through mechanize farming that would be made possible by private capital investment the manufacturing sector of the Nigerian economy is equally comatose and requires a revitalization.
This an area of serious concern. Nigeria does not have industries this is why heavily relies on other economics for the importation of virtually everything ranging from refined petroleum products automobiles, electronics textile and fabrics, construction materials processed food items, medical equipment and pharmaceutical drugs and what not. No nation can become great without a strong manufacturing sector that is producing her customers needs. The most powerful nations in the world today are powerful because they have been able to build strong manufacturing sector that is producing their needs and exporting to the rest of the world. Nigeria must follow suit. It is our detriment that we keep importing virtually all things when we should be producing locally and exporting them. for examples, the more we export manufactured goods the more we export jobs. As our unemployment rate goes up there will be social problems which will prove injurious to the nation and the general populace.
We are also losing our foreign exchange reserve when we import, self sufficiency or reliance will also become a mirage thereby trying us to the a prong string of other nation from whom we are importing. So Nigeria must industrialize. This is a responsibility that must be borne by all the federating units because the center along cannot do it.
There is also the need to tackle corruption. One of main reasons why Nigeria is not developing the rapidly is because of corruption. Resources which should into developing the nation are being diverted into private pockets. Corruption is so endemic in the system it is has permeated every strata of the Nigerian economy and society. This has to change. The nation must take decisive steps towards nipping corruption in the bud. Anti-corruption agencies such as the economic and financial crimes commission, independent corrupt practices and other offences commission, code of conduct Bureav , etc must be up and doing in dis changing their responsibilities.
National unity is also another area Nigeria must work on the nation is so divided along religious ethnic is and regional lines. It is never a united nation which underscores why social crises keep crupting around the situation is so horrible that electing leaders, recruiting workers, and the redistribution of other national pies are done on the basic of these narrow lines. Nigeria’s heterogeneous composition should be an asset in terms of cultural diversity and heritage but reversity and heritage but reverse is the case.
The national orientation agency must rise up to its statutory responsibility of sensitizing the nation it is incumbent on them to partner with regions organizations, traditional rulers, the media, opinion leaders, etc and be sensitizing the nation on the need for national unity because development and cohesion cannot flourish in an atmosphere of mutual hatred.
Insecurity is escalating in Nigeria virtually every geopolitical region is grappling with a peculiar insecurity challenge. For instance, insecurity is ravaging the northwest, the north central is still facing the farmers/herders clashes as well intercommunal conflicts, bank robbery and cultism are the twins worries in the southwest, the southeast has become the playground of the so-called unknown gunmen, while oil theft and militancy are persisting in the oil rich but impoverished south south. So the Nigeria state must rise above these. Good enough, we have gallant security outfits. But the require funding, equipment, morale. Effective intelligence gathering etc.to succeed in taming insecurity in the land.
One of the main sources of Nigeria’s challenges is negative attitude. Everything is a product of attitude. This include corruption, lack of patriotism, bad leadership, bad followership, criminality, bad work ethics and many other unwholesome practices. One of the ways to address all of this is to be organizing robust orientation programs in order to correct these attitudinal tendencies in Nigerians. We need attitudinal rehabilitation programs. A nation is a reflection of the sum total of the behavioural tendencies of its inhabitants, which therefore presupposes that since Nigeria today is not what it ought to be suffice it to stress that the collective behavioural pattern of most Nigerians is not acceptable.
Another aspect Nigeria need to fix is state institutions. A nation is as progressive as its institutions. Institutions in Nigeria are atrophy. For instance, the Nigeria police force is not highly professional, the power sector is nothing much to write home about, our healthcare facilities are archaic, the education sector is grossly underfunded; our road networks are not only insufficient but riddled with potholes; our correctional facilities have become the perennial target of attacks by assailants; water vendors have taken over the responsibility of public water facilities; it’s the same ugly narrative across the sectors of the economy and state institutions.
This has to change. So long as institutions are not up and doing in terms of dis changing their statutory mandates the nation will continue to be at the lowest rung of the development ladder. Fixing institutions require men and women of character, decleveness, version, passion, ideas, etc this means competence has to be main criteria for appointing people to man our institutions.
In a nutshell, Nigeria needs many fixes. And until the fixed are effected, development will continue to be a mirage.
